Inside the World of the Cherokee Bruins Semi-Professional Football Team

The Heart and Hustle of Cherokee County

In the heart of Cherokee County, where community and sports collide to create something truly special, stands the semi-professional football team that's capturing the hearts of locals: the Cherokee Bruins. Founded amidst a blend of passion, sportsmanship, and a deep-rooted love for football, the Bruins have quickly become more than just a team—they're a beacon of unity, hope, and relentless pursuit of dreams.

CherokeeScoop had the pleasure of sitting down with John Little, the co-founder of the Bruins, to peel back the layers of this local semi-professional team. Born and raised in Cherokee County and a proud Sequoyah High School alumni, we talked with John about his journey from sports enthusiast to semi-pro football team co-founder.

The inception was a simple idea fueled by a love for the game and a desire to bring semi-professional football to our community. Together with his partner Randy Fowler, John transformed a post on the local Facebook group, into the birth of the Cherokee Bruins. Together, they're not just building a football team; they're nurturing a family, a movement that transcends the game itself.

The Bruins started out with a successful undefeated first season that led to a heartbreaking overtime loss in the championship game, but the determination to protect and elevate the Bruins' brand never wavered. John and Randy made decisions to ensure the team's integrity and reputation remained intact, laying a solid foundation for the future.

As we venture into the second year under their stewardship, the Bruins are poised for greatness. Transitioning to the Elite American Football League (EAFL), the team faces new challenges and exciting opportunities. "Think of it as moving from NAIA to SEC football," John explained, highlighting the significant leap in competition and exposure. The EAFL, encompassing teams from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Tennessee, offers a platform for the Bruins to showcase their talent and tenacity on a larger stage.

Beyond the field, the Bruins' commitment to community engagement shines brightly. The Bruins are deeply committed to giving back, supporting initiatives like youth football camps, including the summer CYFA camp, and engaging in various community service projects. The team's ethos is built around four core values: Passion, Physicality, Professionalism, and Philanthropy. They continue their commitment to developing the Cherokee County youth with the introduction of the Junior Bruins in 2024-25, a youth initiative, further underscores their commitment to nurturing the next generation of football stars and fans.

"We want to be more than a football team; we aim to be a pillar of the community, inspiring young athletes and bringing people together,"

John Little

Looking ahead, the Bruins just kicked off it’s 2024 season with a bang, dominating the Gulf Coast Bearcats with a staggering 52-0 victory. The energy and promise displayed in that game set the tone for what's to come. Their first home game is scheduled for this Saturday at 7:00 PM against the Alabama Commandos, at the heart of Cherokee County in Veterans Park. Also for all you families out there trying to find somewhere to take the kiddos, the Bruins have made it their policy that kids attend free. It's a testament to their belief that the joy and lessons of sports should be accessible to all, without barriers.

The concessions stand, by the way, is something of a local legend already. It promises to deliver more than just your standard game-day fare, adding another layer of community flavor to the Bruins' events.

The reality that few athletes make the transition from high school to college sports, and even fewer from college to the pros, is not lost on the Bruins. They stand ready to offer a platform for those who refuse to give up on their dreams, providing a sense of belonging, purpose, and the thrill of competition. Their aim? To redefine what it means to be 'semi-pro' by infusing professionalism, passion, and a commitment to excellence in everything they do.

The Bruins have set ambitious goals, not just in terms of wins and losses, but in fostering a culture of professionalism, passion, and philanthropy. "Our dream is to fill Veterans Park with a thousand cheering fans, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of community, spirit and sports excellence," John said.
